Meet our Dev, Fred
Oct 01, 2024 • 2 min read
Meet Fred! 👋 He's been with CC.Talent for 3 and a half years, working as a Fullstack Developer specializing in NodeJS. Working with main languages like Typescript and JavaScript, he loves diving into complex problems and finding creative solutions that balance both technical and business needs.
What He Loves About Remote Work
"One of the best things about working remotely is the freedom to control my environment", Fred shares. While he does enjoy the camaraderie of an office setting, nothing beats the comfort of being in his own space. Some of the benefits he finds with remote work are: productivity, personalized workspace, skipping long commutes, and the flexibility to manage when and how to engage with others.
Overcoming Remote Challenges
A key challenge Fred faces with remote work is the potential for communication breakdowns, especially in asynchronous channels like chat or email. "To overcome this, I tend to over-communicate and be as verbose as I can. Where I would typically just say "yes"/"no" or a very short response, I always try to include context to the answer by repeating what the question was", he shares.
A Memorable Achievement
Fred shares one of his proudest moments at CC.Talent. "A memorable achievement for me was when my client (through my team-lead) asked me to lead a massive migration of our legacy services. The client had a good number of outdated micro-services that needed to run on cloud infrastructure. My team-lead, despite having more experience and being more senior than I am, trusted me enough to figure out how we would accomplish this task. The months-long project needed a good mix of precise planning, as well as improvisation because we wanted it to happen with as little business interruption as possible. This project taught me not just new technical skills, but also in balancing technical and business considerations."
Why Fred Loves Being a Developer
Finding ways to meet both business and technical requirements is like solving a puzzle, and Fred finds it incredibly satisfying when everything clicks — he likes the problem-solving aspect the most. "It allows me to practice my "creativity" and forces me to expand my knowledge, especially when the problem is unique," he adds.
Advice for Future Remote Developers
If you're thinking about a career in remote development, Fred says to focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Establish boundaries, take regular breaks, and watch out for feelings of isolation. Communication is key—especially in remote work, where a lot of collaboration is asynchronous. Being clear and intentional with your communication can make a big difference.
Fun Fact
One thing Fred can’t live without on his desk is his growing sticker collection. Each sticker tells a story—from the coffee roasters I love to the peripherals he uses. It's a little personal touch that reflects his interests, from V60 Ethiopian beans to his Alice-layout keyboard, to the AMD R7 7700x processor that powers my workflow.
